Shopping
This is a domestic task which I really do not enjoy, especially when I see all the unnecessary plastic packaging on our fruit and vegetables.
Here in the UK we are really good about taking our reusable bags when shopping but an area that we could improve on is bags for our fruit and vegetables. I carry with me cotton string bags and try where possible to buy loose. In Switzerland, more fruit and vegetables were loose than in plastic packaging so this is one of the things that I have really taken hard to on my return.
I confess, I am not perfect, if the fresh produce is in better condition in the prepackaged section I will guiltily buy that in preference. However, if we all try to do our bit, where and when, HOPEFULLY the British supermarkets will stop the unnecessary packing. For example, bananas are naturally in a protective covering so they really don’t need the tonnes of plastic they are bagged in (which just make them sweaty).
Don’t worry if you don’t have fruit and vegetable bags to reuse some supermakets are providing traditional brown paper bags. Or even better, if you can, shop in your local farm shop. Less food miles, no plastic and super tasty.
